As you may have seen, October was a no spend month for me. I feel like I'm usuaslly pretty good with spending so this was my first time. I didn't know what I was up against - it was hella hard! The past few months have been tough for everyone and for me, spending money on plants and home goods has become a coping mechanism.
I started off early in the month pretty well, but from the second week on it got worse. We had a birthday, a mini vacation, lots of outdoor social gatherings, eating out and Halloween - none of these things technically counted in my challenge but I still struggled in all areas. Here's the breakdown:
1) No home goods. I ranked this as "HARD" on difficulty level and was right. I purchased several plants and pots, a couple of drawer organizers, a dish rack and probably some other items.
2) No toys for Quinn. I ranked this as "EASY" on difficulty level. I was so wrong again. She got some binoculars at the zoo, a wooden phone, smoothie maker and a small stuffy. Most of it was on vacation and I'll admit after not going anywhere for 10 months I gave in - I was having a moment there. We did get rid of some toys before so that feels a little better, but not really.
3) No clothes or shoes. I ranked this as "EASY" on difficulty level. Wrong again. I thrifted while on vacation and got jeans, a shirt and sunglasses. All items I definitely needed (kind of).
4) No excess food. I ranked this as "MEDIUM" on difficulty level. I think I did ok here. I went to Trader Joe's once and got some things but I didn't go too crazy. We spent more on going out to eat with family and friends which wasn't part of the challenge. We are trying to take advantage of the good weather and cleaner air to get out and try new places while we can.
I realize, these are probably not the results anyone (including myself) wants to hear but they're real. Everything at home is still not cluttered, feels organized, not excessive and bills are still paid. I obviously can do better and as embarrassed as I am about my results I had to update you with the status. Have you been successful at a no spend month? I would love to know how all the tips!
